Comparing 2011 to 2012 Mileage

Posted by on January 8, 2013

Daily Mile just released their 2012 year in review. All things considered. I was pretty happy with my the year. 2012 was the first year I took running seriously. It was the year I started running ultras. As I have mentioned in the past I really don’t like running very much. After my first 50k in 2013 I was hooked on the ultra race. As hard as it is to train, the races are always fun and a true test of the mind, spirit, and physical.

After looking at my 2012 stats I tried to access my 2011 stats and it works. With both 2011 and 2012 data in hand I thought I’d post a comparison of the last two years. Keep in mind that this is both running and biking. There is no way to filter the end of year report but it is easy to figure out the running miles from the data provided.

Let’s look at overall mileage first. I have 395 more miles in 2012 than I did in 2011. I also has 16 more workouts in 2012.  Finally I burned 18 more pounds in 2012. Overall it was a pretty good year!

These next two charts show the most popular activity and what time of day I performed them.  I know I biked much less in 2012 and the charts shows that. Since I am a night running for the most part my time of day is also narrower in 2012.

My average feeling and my longest streak showed no change from 2011 to 2012.  The average miles per workout increased from about 5 in 2011 to about 7 miles in 2012.

Final Thoughts

Just a few final thoughts as we embark on the training and racing adventures of 2013.  Looking back at 2012, I am pretty proud of turning myself into, not only a running, but an ultra runner. To my surprise I did this in about a year’s time.  I don’t have any 2010 data because there is none.  I still have never run a road marathon.  I went from a person who never liked running and only ran in a few half marathons and a handful of 5ks to completing a 50m ultra. I can count the number of races I have done prior to 2011 on one hand and still have a finger or two to scratch my butt.

For the most part 2011 was the start of my running life. Over the past year I learned that I am never going to be able to train as hard or as much as I want.  I take that as a given and just do what I can. I don’t think I have completely finished any running plan that I have ever started. I gave up on training plans and only focus for weekly mileage and the long runs. I feel I know what I need to do to complete a particular race up to the 50m ultra. Maybe when I feel ready to train for a 100m ultra that will change. Maybe not. It seems to be working so I can’t complain at this point.

In 2012 I only planned a handful of 50ks. At the end of the season I decided to try a 50m ultra just for the experience.  I knew I’d get some experience out of it to help me in 2013.  I ended up completing the 50m and I felt I killed it in comparison to how my training went.  I am mentally a stronger running because of the 50m ultra in 2012. I am very happy I took the plunge.

I learned a ton about food and water intake in 2012. I feel I know exactly what I need come race day.  This was one of the hardest things to get a grip on. Once I dialed in my food intake training and racing became so much easier.

2013 will be a year of trying to race more, train smarter, and break my virgin 50k and 50m race times.  I am pretty sure the 100m ultra is out of my reach in 2013 but I said that same thing about a 50m in 2012.  I guess you never know what will happen.

So long 2012 and hello 2013!
